What all waterfront property owners need to
know about aquatic plant control

Living on a lake is a dream come true for most Floridians. Most assume that obtaining their place on the water is the greatest challenge they will face as a waterfront property owner. But after several summers they come to realize that their waterfront requires maintenance just like the lawn. What they may not realize is what they do to their lawn effects their lakefront.
Here are some do's and don'ts that will help property owners live in harmony with their waterfronts.
DO Bag all grass clippings. Grass clippings and other yard debris will decompose and turn to unsightly algae within 48 hours.
DO Dispose of pet waste properly. Don't throw it in the lake. Animal waste is like fertilzer, it makes weeds grow, grow, grow.
DON'T Fertilize within 6 feet of the waters edge. Extra nutrients helps algae and other aquatic weeds to grow.
DON'T Encourage ducks to take up residence in the lake. One duck will produce at least 1 pound of waste each day. Do you really want your children swimming and fishing in a waste filled lake?
POINTS TO PONDER
Understand that nature doesn't like a void. Aquatic plants will naturally establish on your waterfront just like weeds in the garden and will require regular maintenance.
Understand that not all lakes in Florida are naturally spring fed. Most lakes within developments are manmade and required by governmental agencies to retain street and stormwater runoff. These lakes perform a specific function, water retention, during periods of high rainfall. Therefore, they cannot and never will be pristine swimming holes or clear mountain pools from the north.
Understand that Florida has a year round growing season. The water in the lakes of Florida can reach 90+ degrees in the summer. A perfect enviroment for growing weeds.
